BACK UP!
For anyone who happens to still have me on their flist and sees this, back up your LJ entries. LiveJournal fired 20 of its 28 employees This place may not be around much longer.

(I never read my flist anymore, so if everyone is already talking about this, sorry!)

How do you back up your entries? Copy/paste everything elsewhere?

If you're on a Windows machine, use LJ Archive. If you're on a Mac, let me know. The instructions are more complicated.

I'm on a Windows, it seems to have worked. Thanks a lot!

Good, though LJ may not be in as dire straits as it looked like this morning. But a back up can never hurt!

I need help backing up my crap, but I'm not sure that the layoffs will result in the shutting down of the site.

When I get home I'll give you the link to the tool and instructions (since the instructions provided did shit for me...) It's plain text, so if you have any pics that you don't have a back up of else where, you should download those.

Hopefully this is not the end of LJ, but when they get rid of everyone but finance and operations, the writing is kinda on the wall. :(

Thanks. I could just switch to the other computer and export using one of those sites, but I'll get there later. I just used LJ's exporting tool, but eh, it's never hurts.

Oh, I went to back them up on the PC, but if you get the other directions, I'd rather have them on my Mac too.

I totally forgot about you, sorry. :(

LJ dump

(I'm giving you the directions I had to figure out on my own since I never use Terminal stuff, so you may already know part of this.)

Download that. Edit the config sample in text edit for your username and password. Save it as .config, and make sure the box to add .txt is unchecked.

Go into Terminal and get to the directory ljdump is in. To do this, type cd [directory]. For me it was cd users/me/downloads/ljdump-1.2 Then you are in the directory and you type python ljdump.py

That should do it. Though I'm not sure if it will archive posts in communities, and I know a lot of your posts are to your communities, so I don't know how much this will help you at all. Hmm. But it looks like it was only "about a dozen" people laid off rather than 20, so hopefully LJ will not be disappearing anytime soon. :D

Oh don't worry. I'll try it later, but it was a good lesson in what to do either way.
